ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ 70 ಮತ್ತು 80 ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಹುಡುಗರಿಗೆ ಹುಲಿವೇಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಮೈ ಮೇಲೆ ಆವೇಶ ಬಂದಂತೆ. ನವರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಆ ನಾಲ್ಕು-ಐದು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಲಿವೇಷದ ನೃತ್ಯ ನೋಡಿ, ಅದರ ಜೊತೆ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಅಡ್ಡಾಡಿ, ನಂತರ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನ ಶಾರದಾ ಮಾತೆಯ ಶೋಭಾಯಾತ್ರೆಯ ಜೊತೆ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಆ ದಿನಗಳು, ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷ ಮತ್ತೆ ಎದುರು ನೋಡುವಂತವು. ಇಂತಹ ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಹುಲಿವೇಷದ ದಂಡನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟು ಕತೆ ಬರೆಯುವ ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸಾಯಿತು. ಬರೆದು ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ದದಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆಯಷ್ಟು ಸಣ್ಣದಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ವಿನಾಃ ಕಾರಣ ಅದನ್ನು ಎಳೆದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಮಾಡುವುದೋ ಅಥವಾ ಮೊಟಕುಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಇದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಆರು ಇತರ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜೊತೆಗೂಡಿಸಿ ಈ ಕಥಾ ಸಂಕಲನ ಹೊರ ತಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕತೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ. ಕೆಲವು ಕತೆಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಲಿಪಿ ಆನ್ಲೈನ್ ದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿ ಮನ್ನಣೆಗಳಿಸಿವೆ
